Pearl Stringing Service in Derbyshire, UK
I learnt about stringing pearls when I attended a jewellery school in Singapore called JDMIS (Jewellery Design & Management International School). Since then stringing or hand-knotting pearls has been a love of mine and this is a service I am happy to offer within my business; Watermeadow Lane Jewellery.
What Is Pearl Restringing?
Pearl restringing is the process of removing worn or weakened thread and carefully re-threading pearls onto new high-quality silk, with secure knots tied between each pearl.
Over time, the silk thread inside a pearl necklace naturally weakens. Everyday wear causes friction, dirt build-up and gradual stretching. Without proper restringing, pearls can rub against one another or even break free from the strand.
Our professional pearl stringing service restores your pearls by:
- Carefully removing old thread
- Gently cleaning each pearl
- Re-stringing using high-quality silk
- Hand-knotting between every pearl
- Checking and reattaching the clasp securely
This ensures your pearl jewellery remains beautiful, flexible and protected.
Why Do Pearls Need to Be Restrung?
Even genuine freshwater pearls require maintenance. It is generally recommended that frequently worn pearl necklaces are restrung every 1–2 years and the British Pearl Association recommends every 12 months, however it is very much dependant on how often they are worn.
You may need pearl restringing if:
- The thread looks yellow or dirty between pearls
- The necklace feels loose or stretched
- The thread is stretch between the pearls or around the clasp
- The clasp feels weak
- Your pearls are inherited and haven’t been restrung for many years
Professional pearl restringing protects the pearls from rubbing together and helps prevent loss if the strand breaks.
Our Professional Pearl Stringing Process
Every piece entrusted to me is treated with care.
1. Inspection
Your pearl necklace or bracelet is carefully examined to assess condition and thread wear and I photograph the jewellery before I proceed further.
2. Gentle Cleaning
Each and every pearl is lightly cleaned to remove surface dirt and restore natural lustre, and any dirt inside the pearl is carefully removed. Depending on how many pearls there are, this can take some time.
3. Hand-Knotting
I re-string your pearls using traditional hand-knotting techniques, placing a secure knot between every pearl; this is my favourite bit!
Pearl Restringing Prices
Pearl restringing costs vary depending on length and condition of the necklace or bracelet.
As a guide:
- A typical 16–18 inch pearl necklace restringing with knots starts from £80.
- A 50% non refundable deposit is required before I proceed and the remainder upon completion.
Each pearl is individually cleaned and hand-knotted, ensuring a professional finish that restores movement and elegance. If a new clasp is needed, the cost of this will be added on.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pearl Restringing
How often should pearls be restrung?
If worn regularly, pearls should be restrung every 1–2 years to maintain strength and prevent breakage. If they look tired and the thread is yellowing or stretched then they need to be restrung.
Why is silk thread used for pearls if it stretches?
Pearl silk thread is used for pearls because it allows the pearl jewellery to drape beautifully and gives them a natural supple movement. It is also excellent for creating knots between the pearls which stops them from getting dirt inside the pearl. It also prevents the pearls from rubbing against eachother and the knots mean that you will only lose one pearl if the necklace or bracelet breaks.
How long does pearl restringing take?
Turnaround times vary, but most pearl restringing services are completed within 1 week. I will confirm timelines when you enquire. I will only book an appointment when I know I have time to work on your pearls staright away so I can get them back to you quickly.
Can you restring pearl bracelets?
Yes, we restring both pearl necklaces and pearl bracelets using the same professional hand-knotting technique.
Do you repair pearl earrings?
Yes I also repair pearl earrings. Just get in touch and I can take a look.
Do you clean pearls before restringing?
Yes, each pearl is gently cleaned before being restrung to remove surface dirt.
Is pearl restringing worth it?
Absolutely. Professional pearl restringing protects valuable and sentimental pearl jewellery, extending its lifespan significantly. Your pearls will look like new again once they are cleaned and restrung.
Where is your pearl stringing service based?
I am based in South Derbyshire, UK, and offer a in-person appointment to discuss your pearls or if you are not local, a nationwide postal pearl restringing service is available.
