What is a jewellery commission?

A jewellery commission is when you instruct me to make you something that is not already available on my website. A jewellery commission is when I work with you to design and make a piece of jewellery for you or for you to gift to someone else.

How does it work?

It helps if you have an idea of what you would like to be made and gather some ideas of the styles you like, colours, materials and any particular birthstones that could be used. You may have some jewellery that has been passed down such as pearls that can be incorporated into the design with new materials or reworked into a different style. For example; you might have a pearl necklace that you don’t wear and so it could be used it to make some pearl bracelets to give to family members. You could either just use the pearls as they are or I can come up with a design to incorporate some gemstones or crystals into the design.

The Process

Initially we would meet in person; normally in my home in Melbourne, Derbyshire. Here we would discuss all of the above and get an idea of a design together, I will be able to show you the materials I use and get a sense of what you want from this commission and get to know you or a sense of the person it is being made for. Timescales will also be agreed.

I would then go away and look at the design for your jewellery commission and make sure it will work, the materials needed and their availability and come up with a couple more design ideas if needed until the design for the jewellery is finalised and you are happy. I will communicate the design ideas through photos.

How much will the commission cost?

Once the design for the commission is agreed and we are both happy, I will then work on a quote, send this to you and if you are happy with the confirmed design and the quote I would request a 50% non-refundable deposit. The quote will be more expensive that buying a piece of jewellery from my website. You are getting a one to one consultation and a piece of jewellery designed and made for you, so the time, materials and making costs all have to be factored into the quote.

Why is it non-refundable? This is because I have already carried out a lot of the work from the consultation and then the design, both of which take a lot of time. The next step is to order materials and get making so the deposit will cover my time and some material costs.

The end result….

I would only ever get to the end of a commission with a happy customer. I have no wish to make a jewellery commission that is not what you asked for and I would not make something I don’t think is beautiful. So the end result will always be a good one. I continually communicate with you throughout the process and so there are no surprises and you will be aware of exactly what you are paying for.

The final payment for your jewellery commission will be requested upon completion and BEFORE collection.

All my jewellery comes with a 12 month guarantee, details of which can be found here under the warranty section, but commissions are non-returnable and non-refundable once complete.

I also do pearl re-stringing  (£80 for a 16-18 inch necklace) and small repairs (£15 minimum charge) which also require a 50% non-refundable deposit due to the work that will be carried out.
